Roster of the 26th Miss
Notes on the Roster:
I completed compilation of this roster several years ago, a project that spanned over several months. This roster was gathered from the Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in the 26th Mississippi (on microfilm).
My greatest nemesis in sifting through 1340+ military records was the spelling of names. In some records, I had to choose between 4-5 variations. I usually chose the spelling on the initial record, but I did correct a few I knew to be wrong. If you can provide me with correct spellings from your family records, I would be most appreciative.
In no way do I claim these are the only men who served with the 26th. Anyone who has studied Civil War records knows the possibility of lost and/or misplaced names is great. However, in all these years, I have only added 3 names to the list. Gracious descendants of these missing soldiers have provided documents that have authenticated their place on the roster. To add a name, I do require proof. I'm very protective of the integrity of the roster.
I frequently receive requests from people who are hunting for their ancestors. The roster provides you with an opportunity to look for yourself. The roster is arranged by company and each soldier is listed alphabetically. Even though you may have to look through several companies to locate your ancestor, I have made navigation to the next company as easy as a clink. See the "Navigation Tip" to the right.
